The College Community

Our desire

is that we might encounter God and so be shaped into the image of his son, Jesus. We want the good news of Jesus to shape our hearts, our minds, and our actions, that we might be a faithful anticipation of the new creation that God has promised for his world.

Who we are

Welcome to the College Community at Grace! We are a community of 18-23 year-olds within Grace Brethren Church of Long Beach attempting to live faithfully to God in this stage of life we call “college.”

Our Desire

Our desire is that we might encounter God and so be shaped into the image of his son, Jesus. We want the good news of Jesus to shape our hearts, our minds, and our actions, that we might be a faithful anticipation of the new creation that God has promised for his world.

Gatherings

We meet regularly on Sunday mornings, from 11:10am – 12:00pm in Room 210 in the Educational Building. Because of our desire to be fully engrafted into the life of the broader church, we usually spend our Sunday mornings discussing the sermons from the main service.

We also meet every Tuesday night, either in smaller groups (10+ people) serving and eating with the marginalized and hurting in our city, or we are coming together for a night of worship and studying the Scriptures. We serve on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of every month (from approx. 5pm – 7:30pm) and we gather for worship and bible study on the 2nd & 4th (and 5th) Tuesdays of every month, from 7:10pm – 9pm in Room 210.

Commitments

  • Participating together in the truthful and joyful worship of God.
  • Engaging in the ancient practices of the Church (footwashing, Eucharist, liturgical prayer) in our worship.
  • Teaching the Scriptures and preaching the God of those Scriptures in all His complexity, beauty, and glory.
  • Becoming a disciplined community that takes seriously the spiritual practices that help to shape our hearts and minds into the image of Christ.
  • Struggling to discern the will of God in our particular context, in other words, to answer the question: What does it mean to follow Jesus in this time called “college” and this place called “Long Beach”?
  • Serving and developing friendships with those on the margins of our society.
  • Providing contexts for healthy and godly friendships to develop and grow.
  • Cultivating wisdom in the way we study, develop friendships, work, relate to our families, etc.
  • Learning what it means that we are part of a community that extends back thousands of years, and to appreciate this story as our story.
